Example of Teaching Critique

Click on 'Video Sample of Teaching with Technology' link under Week 2 and watch the video. Take notes while you are watching and be critical about how the teacher introduces and involves the classroom in using the technology. Respond to this blog with positive and negative traits of the lesson and how you believe it could be made better.

I think the teacher did a pretty great job. She used powerpoint and smartboard to inform the class about the project. While doing this project the children learned many things. They learned how to use word, cameras, and even used a floppy to tranfer an image of the person they interviewed. This project taught language arts there was the interview process, the interaction, there was also learning taking place when the child asked a question and the person they were interviewing answered. Social studies was learned because of the interview. I love to see children working together. They can learn so much from each other. I probably would have had them work together to come up with questions. Also, the children could have interviewed people from other countries and learned about many different places if she would have helped them to contact someone. Maybe she could have told them to contact a family member or a friend outside of the country and have them email a picture. They would still be learning how to take the image from one place and insert it into another. Overall I think the teacher did a good job.

I agree with Jill that the teacher did a good job implementing technology to her instruction. She guided her students by modeling and demonstrating. Her instructions were clear and she was confident in her knowledge about the equipment. The use of the digital cameras and their photos made the project more exiting and fun, as well as personal. Additionally, children when working in groups learn collaboration and by sharing their ideas they gain even more knowledge. The use of the photo software help the children in the development of their creativity, and the Word Process software helped to improve their language skills. I think that I might have improved the lesson by giving them a little more options in the way they want to conduct the interview or present it, but for the basic introductory lesson, I think the teacher did a good job.

I have to agree with both Jill and Agnieskza. Overall, I think the teacher did a good job in presenting the material of what the students were going to do. I liked how the entire project revolved around technology and how you can incorporate all aspects of the project.(Language arts by interviewing...)

*I liked how she incorporated the smartboard to inform her students about the project. *This helps students to visually see what they will be doing.

*I liked how she told about the equipment operation of the digital camera. She showed the students how to appropriately use the camera and how to care for it.

*She also had her students experience Microsoft Word. By designing an activity, students were able to learn how to use word processing software. :)

*Then, she incorporated Print Shop Deluxe Photo, where students could edit their pictures. *what a great way for children to bring out their creativity!

Having the opportunity to incorporate a variety of skills, makes learning EXCITING !!

The one thing I did not like about how she presented her presentation, is that she didn't mention how student's who have a "physical disability" could be involved in the project. Are these students able to work with another student..so they get to experience what the other children are?...

Wow! This teacher really likes to use technology in the classroom. Watching it was almost like an overload. I was hoping to see a book by the end! The teacher did a great job of using this technology though. The smart board was a creative and effective way to show students what to do versus what not to do, even though it wasn't interactive. However, everything else was. This satisfied the need of both visual and auditory learners.

I know it was only about a five minute video, but to me it almost seemed like she was using technology for the sake of using technology. It wasn't really integrated into anything. For example, what was the interview for? Were they supposed to learn about a profession? Their family history? The ways people use math in everyday life? She may have done this, but I didn't catch it in the video.

I think it is awesome that she had them include a photograph. They had to edit the pictures and then put them into word. I never learned this in school, but now I am always working with pictures. It seems like the teacher is teaching them the most useful skills they need in today's world.

I would also want to give the students a little more choice in this project. She told them what font to use and how to present information. I would rather the students be creative when using a word processor. However, I understand her request since this is what many of their teachers in the future will ask for.

I think the teacher did a wonderful job at introducing all these tools to her students. She presented a powerpoint using the smartboard. I also read the lesson plan and it said that the students were able to use the smartboard to write down there ideas of people they could interview.

The students were taught how to used many things as well. They had to ask if they could tape record their interview. They also had to take a picture using a camera with a floppy disk inserted into it. The teacher did a great job at showing the students how to use the camera and the floppy disk. The students had to type a paper about the interview using Microsoft word. They also used print shop to edit the photo they took.

I think there should have been more collaboration between the students. They could have done the entire interviewing process in pairs. Then they could have typed out their own individual reports. This way it would not have been so overwhelming.

The teacher did a pretty good job using technology but there are some things that could have been changed. The smart board was good because it had a short video on the power point the teacher was giving. The video gave the students an example of an interview. Also the idea of using the smart board gave the students a chance to get out of their desks and more around and sit on the floor. Some of the bad things about the power point is it seems hard to read because the lights are not dimmed and they are kind of glaring on the board. The thing also didn’t involve the students at all they just sat there and had nothing to do with the board.

The digital camera was a great idea for the students as well. The hard part was when she was explaining the camera it was hard for the students because they couldn’t really see what she was pointing to. I think that is this one she may have just been finding a way to put this standard into a lesson plan without making it too much work for her.

The students then used word to type out a paragraph about the person they interviewed. This was using technology in a pretty good way. She was allowing the students to type but she wasn’t allowing them to choose their own font style. She did however explain what center align was so that the students could use that function. They also got to edit the photo that they took. This was helpful because digital photography is becoming very popular today. They also learned how to insert the photo into the word document which is also really useful.

This technology experience was a pretty good one for the students. Most of the stuff that they learned they will be able to use again. The experience will help them in their future of using computers.

Better late than never I suppose :)
This was a very poor example of how technology can be used in the classroom effectively. I like that the teacher shown in the video obviously has an interest in incorporating technology into her curriculum which is a good thing, but she is going about it all wrong. She has powerpoint presentations yes but they are set up in a manner that is equivalent to a blown up worksheet. She utilizes unique features of technology such as audio and also provides examples of her modeling the proper way to interview someone, but it was done in a way that lacks any real purpose for utilizing technology. She merely did it, to say that she uses technology in the classroom. Like I said before, I applaud the effort the teacher obviously is making at trying to incorporate more technology in the classroom, but often times throughout the clip I asked myself, this must be a joke right? The students in the video for the most part look totally disengaged.
